About Me
My name is Captain Soderstrom, and I am a licensed mental health counselor in New York, and a licensed professional counselor in Michigan and Minnesota.
I received a master of arts in psychological counseling and a master of education in mental health counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, NY in 2015. I took my time to make sure I was well trained and prepared after graduate school, and practiced with a limited permit under supervision for four years at the Psychotherapy Center for Gender and Sexuality at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP) before earning my licensure as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in New York State in 2020. During my training and permitted practice, I worked at community health clinics in NYC serving individuals, families, and groups, and specialized in work with children who have/had a parent incarcerated and LGBTQIA+ clients. During the COVID-19 pandemic I moved to the upper peninsula of Michigan, and in fall of 2022 I was licensed in Michigan State as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). In 2023 I also became an LPC in Minnesota State.
I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. I have specialized training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Career Counseling, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and mindfulness, Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), intersectionality, feminist therapy, multiculturally competent counseling, person/client-centered therapy, polyvagal theory, psychodynamic therapy, working with C-PTSD, working with individuals who are spiritual and religious, working with LGBTQIA+ youth and adults, and more generally queer and trans competent care.
